The New Rules of Elegance. Royal Ascot 2012

You usually hear about the Ascot horse races once a year, whn on Tv they show the extravagant fascnators and hats that paraded. Or if you are a fashionista, Ascot is associated with the famous scene of My Fair Lady in which Audrey/Elsa finishes off her transformation ina tru lady going to Ascot wearing an outfit, design by the eclectic Cecil Beaton, that went down in history.

Si sente parlare delle corse dei cavalli di Ascot una volta l'anno, quando in televisione passano le immagini di fascinators e cappellini  piu' stravaganti che hanno sfilato durante la kermesse. Oppure se si e'nel mondo fashion, Ascot richiama la famosissima scena di My Fair Lady in cui Audrey/Elsa completa la sua trasformazione in una vera signora andando proprio alle blasonatissime corse dei cavalli di sfoggiando un outfit, disegnato dall'ecclettico Cecil Beaton, passato alla storia.

 

In England this event has connotations less folkloristic than abroad, being part of their society and costume heritage since 1711 when Queen Anne established this 'habit'. What the Ascot crowd wears year after year reflects those subtle but important changes in society in general and not only in the elite group that is there.
The big news that it's going to make the Royal Ascot 2012 different it's the new dress code, more prescriptive and strict than before.
In my opinion, thisis not big news, as the outfits had been goign from bad to worse in the last few years. Weird looks that went beyong elegance and taste that not even Lady Gaga would have been able to think of!

In Inghilterra questo evento ha connotazioni meno folkloristiche che all'estero, essendo parte della storia della societa' e del costume inglese fin dal 1711 quando la regina Anne istitui'questa consuetudine. Cio' che il pubblico di Ascot indossa di anno in anno riflette quei piccoli ma significativi cambiamenti della societa' in generale e non solo dell'elite che si trova li.

La notizia che rendera' il Royal Ascot 2012 diverso e' il dress code che e'appena stato diffuso, con regole ancora piu'prescrittive di prima. 

A mio parere, questa notizia non arriva inaspettata, vista la deriva verso cui gli outfit di Ascot era approdata negli ultimi anni. Look improbabili e al limite massimo dell'eleganza e del gusto, spesso superando anche l'estro di Lady Gaga!

Let's see the new rules for the 2012 edition - 19th to 23rd of June.
FOR HER:

-Fascinators and headpieces must have at least a base of 10cm.

-Skirts just above the knee or longer and straps of 2.5.cm or bigger.

-Strapless dresses, alter neck and bare shoulders are not admitted.

-Trouser suits are admitted but have to match in color and fabric.

 Vediamo le nuove regole in forza per l'edizone 2012 dal 19 al 23 giugno.

PER LEI:

Fascinators e accessori per il capo (headpieces) dovranno avere una base che copra almeno 10cm della testa.

Gonne appena sopra al ginocchio o piu' lunghe e vestiti con bretelline di almeno 2.5cm.

 Vestiti senza bretelline, con scollo all'americana o a barchetta sono vietati.

Completo top e pantalone dello stesso materiale e colore.

FOR HIM:

Morning dress in grey or black that icludes:

• Waistcoat and tie
• Black or grey top hat
• Black shoes.

The top hat can be not worn in the restaurant, in the private box, the club garden or balcony and worn at all times in public.

PER LUI:

 Abito da cerimonia da giorno (giacca con le code) nero o grigio che includa:

• Gilet e cravatta
• Cappello a cilindro  nero o grigio
•  Scarpe nere

Il cilindro puo' essere tolto solo al ristorante, nel box privato, balcone o giradino del club, mai in pubblico. Non sono permessi sul cilindro neanche fasce e orpelli colorati.
